Drew is a Red!

This week is the last week for our work experience student Drew Worsley from Ribblesdale High School.

During his time with us he has been to several school sessions to see how they are carried out as well as having the opportunity to plan sessions as well as assisting at our healthy life style mission sessions. Further to this he has been helping in the office to see what else goes on behind the scenes at the Trust. Drew has wrote about his time at the Trust :

‘I have enjoyed my work experience at Accrington Community Trust as I have been able to get an insight into the job which I would like to do in the future. I found it good to work with the coaches and see their different methods. We went to West End and did a healthy eating week, we did things such as food based games where they’d be awarded points if they choose the correct foods. We then did different games and tournaments of dodge ball to show that it’s not food have you have to be good with but exercising helps even more. We then did an Olympics based activity at ST. Nicholas school where we gave the students various sports and then we allowed them to play and stopped when we could give them some advice on how to improve their game and how they could possibly be more strategic. This meant that the children had to think more carefully about their movement this means that they can see what they were doing wrong and try to improve upon it. We started to see an improvement in the dodge ball games with them being more competent while playing and more comfident in trying new things. We did a range of sports at All-Saints such as Volleyball, Rounder’s and Football to a year 5 class focusing mainly on being sports leaders. This included things as Respect, Self-Belief, Leadership and Determination as your main priorities as a sport leader. I also attended a community session for people with disabilities. This was great to see how the coaches made sure everyone could get involved despite how severe their disability was. The session contained rotating teams as we split them into 3 teams and switched the teams accordingly. We also went to Read St. Johns where we did king of the pitch where if you won you’d move up a pitch and down if you’d lose we also added different rules where certain people would have to do certain things to score or might get more goals if a certain person was to score meaning players had to defend differently. This has been one of the best times of my life and I had it at work experience I didn’t really expect that but it has been and has assured that I want to do coaching as my full time job.’

Sarah Hunt administrator commented’ Drew has been a great help over the last couple of week and its brilliant to hear that he has found his time at the Trust helpful for his future career’.

This Tuesday saw the summer National Citizenship Service (NCS) set off for the first residential at Kepplewray in the Lake District. Over 50 students have spent the week away from home enjoying the outdoors with our staff and volunteers. The NCS is a once in a lifetime opportunity for 16 to 17 year olds that allows them to gain a qualification for their CV while making new friends. Students at Keppleway have had the opportunity to try rock climbing, canoeing and mountain trekking which they may not have had the opportunity to try normally. Next week sees the group at Preston UCLAN where they will be living independently under the watchful eyes of our staff.
