Horrific Accident Inspires NCS Action Day

A horrific accident has inspired the football community to promote positive mental health and raise funds for a fellow National Citizen Service Graduate.

Accrington’s National Citizen Service Graduates are gearing up to promote Mental Health on Saturday for Action Day on 18th of March. The Action Day is held every year across England and Northern Ireland to raise awareness about social action and promoting causes that can really make a difference to local communities.

NCS and the Action Day is managed in Lancashire by the regional NCS provider Inspira, and delivered through a number of local organisations in the county.

“This year we are focusing on Mental Health,” said Dave Todd, Inspira’s Contract Manager. “The NCS  Regional Youth Board (which covers Cumbria and Lancashire), chose  Mental Health in Young People as they believe it is not talked about enough amongst their peer networks and at school. Many thought that when it is spoken about at school they do not feel it is looked at seriously. Many of the Youth Board members are working on projects looking at anxiety and school/exam stress, something that is becoming more and more common as they are getting older.”

To compliment raising awareness about the importance of positive mental health, NCS Graduates from the Football Community Trusts in Lancashire and Cumbria are also raising money for their fellow NCSer and futsal player Michael Johnstone.

“Michael was hit by a car in January this year, and subsequently lost the lower part of his leg ,” said Kathryn Hoyle NCS Co-ordinator at Accrington “As a community we wanted to support Michael in raising funds for an athletic prosthetic leg while tying in with the regional theme of Mental Health and the importance of staying positive.”

On the 18th of March Accrington Stanley Community Trust will be have an information hub, surveys to complete and a donation bucket to raise funds for Michael in Accrington town centre.

“NCS is all about giving young people the tools, opportunities and respect to achieve amazing things in their communities,” continued Kathryn Hoyle. “Promoting Mental Health and supporting Michael are excellent examples of how young people can really make a difference to the lives of other people.”

Across the country more than a thousand young people will be getting involved in Action Day 2017.  NCS is currently recruiting for the summer programme – go to www.ncsnorthwest.co.uk to find out more.
