Students step out of comfort zone this Autumn with NCS

This autumn saw our NCS team take over 30 young people away to Dearne Valley in Doncaster for a week’s residential at the Kingswood outdoor activity centre.

A lot of the participants had never had the opportunity to take part in something like the National Citizen Service (NCS) before and were a little apprehensive about what exactly they would be doing. But our staff had the week jam packed with activities so much so that the young people didn’t get a moment to dwell as they were busy taking part in activities such as raft building, zip lining, laser quest, high ropes, leap of faith and they had a campfire to name just some of the activities that went on!

Once they arrived back in Accrington they went straight in to their social action phase which consisted of a sexual health talk, a mental health talk as well as receiving first aid training. Alongside this, in two groups, they also planned what they wanted to do as part of their community action. Group one decided that they wanted to make up care boxes for the homeless in Hyndburn as well as fundraise for Maundy relief and the Salvation Army. Group two carried out a sponsored walk along the canal alongside holding a raffle to raise money to buy craft supplies for a craft session that they are going to hold in a local care home.

The NCS programme has been running for the last few years allowing 15-17 year olds the chance to do something outside of their comfort zone and challenge themselves in this once in a life opportunity. Skye Cooper, a graduate from Autumn 2019 NCS said “My NCS experience was challenging where staff engaged us to take part in different activities. NCS was inspirational because it helped to conquer fears and also brought out my confidence, personality and helped me make new friends and socialise with new people”

The next NCS programme will be in July 2020 which will see young people visit YHA Grasmere for a week of fun activities followed by independent living at the University of Preston and social planning back in Accrington.
