Belthorn Academy’s last minute defeat in EFL Kids Cup

Yesterday saw Belthorn Academy narrowly defeated in the semi-finals of the EFL Trust Kids Cup Northern finals in a rainy Doncaster.

Belthorn earned their place in the northern finals by beating their Hyndburn district competitors and then going on to beat the winners of the Ribble Valley competition to represent Accrington Stanley this year. They joined schools who represented Sunderland, Doncaster Rovers, Bradford City, Burton Albion, Shrewsbury, Blackpool, Walsall, Fleetwood Town FC, Rochdale and Barnsley FC who were all battling it out for the chance for their team to play at Wembley in May.

The team got the day off to a flying start with a win over local rivals Blackpool. This was followed by a tough game against Walsall which saw them go one nil up only to concede two goals before the final whistle. Not a team to give up though, Belthorn followed it up with another 1 nil win over Barnsley and 4-3 win over Burton.

The final match in their group saw them take on Sunderland and win, taking them to the knock outs playing another local rival Fleetwood Town. This match proved to be a real thriller, with Belthorn keeping the pressure on Fleetwood throughout the match to only to be defeated with the last touch of the game 0-1!

‘It is a great achievement to reach this stage in the competition’, commented Lee Walsh, Head of Sport, ‘they have beaten over 30 local schools to be here and battled against some good competition today. They should be really proud of themselves’

Congratulations to Walsall who went on to be the overall winner on the day and will play the southern division winners at Wembley.
