Burnley College take on NCS!

Accrington Stanley Community Trust’s National Citizen Service (NCS) Autumn activities culminated with a visit to Burnley College, where we delivered our two-week programme to the students of the Public Services Course.

Days one and two saw our students travel to Borwick Hall Outdoor Education Centre, where they were able to take on a range of activities such as canoeing, high rope climbing and caving, which students all put maximum effort into despite the inevitable December climate.

Thursday saw the young people of Burnley College take part in two workshops at Life Church in Burnley: Your Voice Matters and Food for Thought. The first challenged the students to create their own island and every aspect of life upon it, eventually spawning their dream society.

Once all teams had completed this and presented to the rest of their groups, everyone was asked to vote on whose island was the best and once the results were in, they were informed about how close the results were. Students were then left to discuss how another few votes could have changed the result, stressing the importance of voting when they become old enough.

The afternoon session saw the young people tackle our Food for Thought workshop as they tried to decipher the difference between branded and unbranded food. After sampling different products such as crisps, biscuits and hard-boiled sweets, the students were asked about how much of a taste difference there really was. Following that, they were told switching to unbranded products in some areas could save a substantial amount on grocery bills each month.

Returning to Life Church the following day, we began the day with a visit from Footlights Theatre who helped take the students through a Confidence Building workshop with various games intended to get every student to engage in a fun and energetic way.

Social Action was the theme for the afternoon with students tasked to completely organise an activity to help a charity in the local area, with ideas such as homeless hampers and money raised by a football match donated to a plethora of local organisations. Each group came up with a rough idea of what they wanted to deliver the next week and with that the first half of the programme was finished.

Students came back for the second week ready to finalise plans for their social action activities across the week. Once everything had been set in stone, each group was taken into Burnley town centre to take part in Stanopoly, our take on the classic board game, but without the flipping of the board.

Teams started from Burnley bus stations and had to navigate themselves around the town, visiting landmarks such as Burnley Market, Turf Moor and Towneley Park, rolling the dice until they had completed one full cycle round the board, answering questions about the various sites in order to buy them.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday saw each group’s social action programmes delivered both on the Burnley College campus and in the local community as charities were provided with donations across the week. Thursday also saw the Burnley College students take part in their NCS graduation, with various activities taking place in the sports hall. Each young person was also given a certificate and a t-shirt to mark their time with us and with that, they had completed our NCS programme.

A great end to Accrington Stanley Community Trust’s largest NCS programme ever and we’d like to wish a great thanks to Borwick Hall Outdoor Education Centre, Life Church Burnley and of course the students and staff of Burnley College for a great two weeks and we wish the students well in their future endeavours.
