Easter HAF Full of Good Eggs

Easter HAF Full of Good Eggs

Over the recent school holidays Accrington Stanley Community Trust have delivered the Holiday Activities and Food Programme at St Christopher’s High School.

The provision makes sure that children who would normally receive free school meals during term time are provided for during the holiday break.

Each child was provided with a healthy lunch and snacks each day, courtesy of Accrington Asda who also very generously donated further snacks for everyone to take home with them.

ASCT have been involved with the initiative for over a year now, running the programme for a fourth time, and are proud to do our bit to support disadvantaged families in our community.

Our four-day programme saw participants throw themselves into a whole host of different sporting sessions led by qualified coaches with something for everyone who attended.

These sessions combined a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities, getting out in the fresh air whenever the weather permitted as participants were taught new skills in sports which they may not have been completely familiar with.

As the participants got to grips with the basics of various sports, the level of effort and application was extremely high, with everyone keen to get involved and enjoy themselves.

Kean, 12, came along to all four days, enjoying the experience: “I really enjoyed all the games on offer. We played hockey, dodgeball, football, basketball and longball with dodgeball being my favourite. I got along with all the coaches well and would recommend it to anyone considering coming next time.”

All in all, the week was a great success with children kept active and healthy through the Easter break.

Head of Sport, Lee Walsh, commented: “The HAF project is into its 2nd year now and it’s a brilliant initiative. The young people get their lunch provided but that isn’t really the main thing for us. It’s brilliant that we can engage with children who wouldn’t normally be able to access things like sports clubs and extra-curricular activities.

The children have been given the opportunity to play multiple sports over the week, make new friends and generally be active. Anything Accrington Stanley can do to get children off their games consoles and out playing sport in a safe environment is brilliant and we are proud to be a part of it.”

Accrington Stanley Community Trust plan to deliver the HAF programme once again during the summer holidays, with bigger and better things planned for what we hope will be our best programme yet.
