Healthy Success

The second year of our +sport Move and Learn project has proven to be a huge success. The free project was taken up by over 25 schools across the Hydnburn, The Ribble Valley and Rosendale area, with phenomenal feedback received from participants, teachers and coaches.

The free sessions focus on teaching year 5 and 6 pupils about what a healthy lifestyle consists of, how to keep a healthy balanced diet, and why it’s important to stay active. Once a classroom session is completed the pupils move on to a practical where they get the chance to take part in football, dodgeball and handball sessions. “I have enjoyed learning about our bodies and what is good for us. I’ve also enjoyed playing the sports.” (Katie, Year 5 pupil).

The project was delivered to over 950 pupils this year with the sessions keeping them engaged throughout and allowing them to have a lot of fun whilst being challenged and learning the importance of keeping healthy and active as well as how this can be achieved. “The programme has really benefitted my students and they have really engaged with the learning. Josh, the coach, has delivered the programme to a very high standard. Thank you very much” (Nathan Griffiths year 5 Teacher at Belthorn Primary).

As well as the 6 week project for year 5 and 6 we delivered 3 Joy of Moving festivals, the festivals where 2/3 day events for the whole school. These events allowed every class to take part in a practical session where we used multi skills games with a focus of healthy eating to allow the pupils to come in have a great time and start to think about what a balanced diet means, as well as a penalty shootout challenge.

Community Sports Officer Josh Cooper says “the move and learn project is fantastic, it allows the children to come in and have 1 and a half hours of challenging fun. Both classroom and practical lessons are designed very well and keep the pupils engaged throughout which allows them to learn a lot and have a great time. It’s great to come into these sessions and instantly see smiles on the children’s faces, and knowing were having a positive effect and can help shape a child’s life is a great feeling.”

The +sport move and learn project is now heading into its third year where we aim to be bigger and better once more. After the success of this year spaces are filling up quickly, if you would like your school to take part in this fantastic, free, project then please contact Josh Cooper on 01254 304071 or email josh.cooper@stanleytrust.co.uk
