Kids Cup Northern Area Finals

Kids Cup Northern Area Finals

Last week, Accrington Stanley Community Trust welcomed all northern League One clubs for the Northern Area Finals of the Kids Cup, with the winners earning the right to play at Wembley in the National Finals.

Teams were split into two groups of six, with first and second from each group progressing to the semi-finals.

A well contested group stage saw Doncaster Rovers finish top of Group A, with Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday following them into the knockout stages in second position.

Group B was hotly contested, with the final match between Fleetwood Town and Wigan Athletic deciding who would join Crewe Alexandra in the latter stages.

Fleetwood emerged victorious, with that result sealing first position just ahead of the Railwaymen.

As the prize of walking out onto the hallowed turf of Wembley was moving ever closer, the matches were becoming ever tighter. Both semi-finals were settled by a single goal as Crewe and Sheffield Wednesday overcame Doncaster and Fleetwood with 1-0 victories respectively.

With only one match between the teams and Wembley, focus and tension were high in equal measures. A cagey first half saw the sides locked in a stalemate, with everything to play for in the final six minutes of the tournament.

The Yorkshire side were the ones who found an extra gear in the second half, scoring three goals without reply, sending them through to the National Finals at Wembley Stadium in style.

A huge thanks to Bolton Wanderers, Burton Albion, Crewe Alexandra, Doncaster Rovers, Fleetwood Town, Morecambe, Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday, Shrewsbury Town, Sunderland, Wigan Athletic and of course Accrington Stanley, who were valiantly represented by Barrow URC school.
