Over-50s Football sessions

Over-50s Football sessions

‘It’s not walking football!’ was the general cry on a visit to the over 50s football session!

The Accrington Stanley Community Trust Friday football sessions may be advertised as ‘walking football’ but the players admit it does get a bit more fast-paced and competitive than that when they take to the pitch.

The session is mainly for over 50s and it lasts 90 minutes, taking place outside at The Hub in summer and inside at Hyndburn Sports Centre in the winter.

Head Coach at the Community Trust Brigan Young oversees the sessions and admits: “It’s a really good standard, I facilitate it. I sometimes have to referee and I even play if we are short on numbers but it is competitive. They all enjoy it and it’s great to see.”

Ergin, who came over from Turkey to Accrington in 1970, said: “I always played amateur football and eventually I found this on the internet and I came and joined in.

“We really look forward to it, it’s quite competitive.

“I come here to lose weight but I don’t seem to lose much! The guys are lovely, thanks to Accrington Stanley they gave us this opportunity to come here and enjoy ourselves.”

John said: “It began as walking football but matured into something different! We have a WhatsApp group which feeds off the Friday matches. There is a bit of banter.

“It’s a nice blend of physicality, socializing and keeping me fit and it stops my wife nagging me for not getting enough exercise!”
