Rhyddings Pupils Discuss Their Future Aspirations at Special Visit

Rhyddings Business and Enterprise School in Oswaldtwistle is designated as a specialist Enterprise school, and the curriculum includes many extra-curricular opportunities and enrichment activities. This prepares all the young people to be the best that they can be academically, and leave as well rounded individuals.

As part of an ongoing #AmazingAccrington initiative to bring schools and employers closer together, recently Year 10 hosted a visit from Martin Fearon, of Accrington Stanley Community Trust. ASCT work with the local community in 4 key themed areas: Sports Participation, Education, Health & Wellbeing and Social Inclusion. Through football, they have the ability to engage people, improve community cohesion and raise the hopes and aspirations of the people of Hyndburn.

As an example of the great work they do outside football, to celebrate World Book Day the Stanley Trust gave 200 free, brand new books to several primary schools in the local area as part of an exciting partnership between the Premier League and the National Literacy Trust to celebrate World Book Day.

Martin was at Rhyddings to present to the pupils about the education, apprenticeship and training opportunities available at the Trust, on their programmes for learners who are aged 16 and above. They are based at the multi million pound Stanley Sports Hub, which is home to the Community Trust office, purpose-built classrooms and state of the art sports facilities. This fantastic facility ensures staff and students are based in an environment which allows them to develop professionally and personally.

The Year 10 visit was particularly important as students can now enrol on the Trust’s Programme for entry in 2022, when they will have completed their time at Rhyddings. ASCT have 60 places available now. You can see more, and apply, on the Amazing Accrington page here: https://opportunities.amazingaccrington.co.uk/portfolio/accrington-stanley-community-trust/

Sara Britcliffe, MP for Hyndburn and Haslingden, was unable to be there but sent a video message of support shown a big screen, to inspire the pupils in their future choices and career paths. She also answered questions they had sent through in advance.

Sara said: “We do have some brilliant career opportunities in Hyndburn – we’re also working to make sure the courses that you’re interested in are there, and for the skills you will need for the future. We’re working to make Accrington a place that you’re proud to live, and to work in.”

Andrew Williams, Headteacher of Rhyddings, said: “You’ll start Year 11 in September thinking about your future and careers. I attended the Amazing Accrington Education Summit recently and it was a real, genuine eye opener about the opportunities that exist in Accrington and Hyndburn. You can have a very prosperous future, with what’s available in Hyndburn.”
