Accrington Stanley Ladies 4 Sir Tom Finney Ladies Reserves 0

It was a change of scenery on Sunday for Accrington Stanley Ladies as they hosted Sir Tom Finney Ladies Reserves at the Wham Stadium. The Stanley Ladies wanted to follow in the footsteps of the men’s team with a big win, keeping the unbeaten home record for 2018 going. There was a sense of excitement as the players were playing in front of their biggest home crowd and they wanted to put on a good performance for all those watching.

It was a blistering start to the game as excitement was running high, Stanley Ladies were playing some fantastic football and took an early lead through Captain Keara McDonough who calmly slotted home in front of goal. As the first half went on there were some big tackles beginning made as both teams were battling to keep possession. Stanley Ladies remain calm and resilient on the ball and our midfield maestro’s Gabby Sabatino and Shireen Kempster helped keep the Ladies ticking on the ball. It wasn’t long until Stanley were through on goal again with some fantastic movement from Alex Atkinson, providing space for Keara again who was in fine form throughout the game and finished to make it 2-0 to Stanley!

It was a good first half for Stanley Ladies but the size of the pitch was taking its toll on both teams, so changes were made in the second half to try keep all the players fresh and fighting. The help of our new physio Sami Smithson was great in help keep the players fit and raring to go! Stanley now wanted to see the game through and try to put on a show for the amazing fans that came to support.

The second half was a brilliant performance from Stanley Ladies, the defence of Kerry, Nina, Lauren and Amber were brilliant, strong and composed. The unit worked fantastic together and rarely let Sir Tom Finney through on goal. This spread our confidence throughout the team and even allowed some players to do a bit of showboating, with Lucy Berwick showing some fine trickery to lob the ball over the oppositions head as she was running down the wing.

Half way through the second half Stanley’s confidence was strong following some great passing football being played across the pitch. Our Player of the Match Keara McDonough was fighting all over the pitch trying spur the ladies on. Keara eventually got her rewards as again she was found in the box with loads of time and space by her teammates for her to calmly finish home. 3-0 Stanley and a well-deserved hat-trick for Keara.

As the game went on there was some fantastic runs being made from Katie Holbrook and Lucy Berwick on the wings as well as in the midfield. Midfielder Shannon Astbury calmly collected the ball down with a fantastic first touch and played the ball to Elle Kayley who went onto a maizey run into the box and produced a lofted ball to find Lucy Berwick at the back post! 4-0 to Stanley!

The game ended 4-0 and it was a fantastic performance from Stanley Ladies. They did their supporters and Accrington Stanley proud. Manager Alex Palffy said “It was a great performance from the Ladies, we played particularly well in the second half with some great passing football. This is a big month for us with lots of games to be played and hopefully we can play with the same confidence as today. We would just like to thank Accrington Stanley Football Club for letting us use their facilities as it was a great opportunity for our Ladies and we thoroughly enjoyed our day at the Wham”.
