Stanley’s Junior Disability Sports Sessions

Stanley’s Junior Disability Sports Sessions

Earlier this year we launched our three year project in partnership with BBC Children in Need.

Receiving this funding will allow us to reach more disabled children and give them a greater sense of inclusion in their community. Unfortunately disabled children often face numerous barriers when it comes to sports participation, this is something that we want to change.

The fun sessions lead by qualified staff aim to help participants with their overall physical wellbeing as well as their mental health and confidence. The FREE two hour session on a Tuesday evening provides local children who have a disability an opportunity to play a range of sports and games in a safe environment.

By attending these sessions we hope that new friendships are formed and that the children realise that having a disability doesn’t mean that you can’t be involved with sport.

The weekly sessions have been running for the last month and have had a stream of regular participants in attendance, who have been participating in games such as hockey, basketball, football and many more fun games!

Lee Walsh, Head of Sport said ‘The BBC Children in Need funding has allowed us to provide a session that can make a positive impact on children’s lives. We are glad that the children who already attend are enjoying themselves and welcome anyone who would like to try the sessions.’

BBC Children in Need funding relies on the energy and commitment of thousands of fundraisers and supporters across the UK who donate their time and money to support the Appeal.  Whether its cake sales, wearing pyjamas to school or having a song and dance, every penny of the money raised goes towards supporting projects across the UK.

All grants go to projects working with children and young people living in the UK who may be affected by homelessness, neglect, abuse or poverty, or those who have faced challenges in their lives such as serious illness, disabilities and psychological disorders.

Come and join in our sessions on a Tuesday evening at Accrington Academy from 5.30pm, its free and there is no need to book!
