Students step out of comfort zone in to the NCS experience

Our NCS team were kept busy this autumn with two groups of young people being taken away as part of the Autumn National Citizen Service (NCS).

They took a group of students from both Accrington Academy and Accrington and Rossendale College away to Kingswood in Colomendy and to Rock UK on the Scottish borders. Both groups had a three night residential experience, which for some of the students, was the longest they had been away from home. They took part in outdoor activities and team bonding such as rock climbing, zip lining, night walk, swimming and high ropes.

Once they returned from the residential they entered into the next phase, life skills. The students took part in CV writing workshops, confidence skills, sexual health, drug and alcohol awareness sessions.

After attending these workshops, in their teams they took part in phase three of the programme, social action planning and delivery.  The students from Accrington and Rossendale College planned a fun day at their college where they had a cake sale, penalty shootout and a coconut shy with lots of prizes. They raised £68 for the charity Tree of Hope.  A charity that offers support to families of seriously ill and disabled children throughout the UK who need specialist medical surgery, treatment and therapy in order to free them from suffering, giving a better quality of life. Meanwhile the students from Accrington Academy arranged a non uniform day within the school, they had a cake sale and penalty shootout during lunch time. They raised £82.50 for the charity MIND the mental health charity that provides information and supports those with mental health issues.

Finally they were ready to graduate, Accrington Stanley Community Trust hosted their National Citizens Service graduation event on 6th November 2018 at Accrington Stanley Vs West Bromwich Albion U-21 game.

Kathryn Hoyle NCS Manager says “Extremely proud of all the young people’s efforts, the amount of team work and enthusiasm they have put into the programme has been phenomenal. Both students from Accrington Academy and Accrington and Rossendale are a credit to their colleges.”
