Summer NCS

We have reached the end of our summer NCS trip and what a trips it’s been!

We started the programme on the 30th July from the Wham Stadium leaving for the Dearne Valley where a jam packed week awaited our young participants.

Once settled at Kingswood Adventure center the participants had a week’s residential that was full of outdoor activities. They participated in laser quest, zip wire, abseiling, team activities such as scaverage hunts and orienteering, archery and much more!

Week two saw the participants at the University of Cumbria, where they experienced independent living. Each flat was given a set food budget where they had to agree a meal plan and buy enough food for meals throughout the week. They also participated in finance and university talks as well as taking part in a skills workshop.

After a busy two weeks on residential, they arrived back in Accrington ready for their social action planning delivery. Once back the participants received talks from charities in the local area, every action has a consequence, Maundy relief and Adams story. The local fire service came in to discuss what their job involves on a day to day basis as well as having a local media company, Shooters, drop in to help the student’s film movie trailers and discuss what is involved in their work. Finally the participants decided on their social action projects and planned what they were going to do the following week.

The last week of the summer NCS saw the projects planned come to light. Groups planned a Penalty shoot out and small stall at Hyndburn leisure centre which saw them raise £184.90 for Oliver’s Neuroblastoma appeal, a canal walk took part which saw money raised go to Churchview  as well as a cake stand in the town centre which raised £203 for the British Heart Foundation. Other groups volunteered at local Care homes as well as organising a park clean up at Bullough Park, this saw 15 bags of rubbished collected in only a few hours.

This summer these young participants have formed new friendships while gaining new skills. If this appeals to you, why not try it for yourself next summer if you are 16-17 years old. For more information go to ww.stanleytrust.co.uk or call 01254 304071.
