Week 2: Update from the Head Coach – Accrington Stanley Ladies FC

Accrington Stanley Ladies FC Head Coach, Bryn Tracey, gives an update on last weekends 1-0 league win against Sir Tom Finney Women’s Development Team:

Sunday’s game was an arduous battle against a tough Sir Tom Finney Women’s Development Team so I am pleased to come away with all three points. Two wins from our opening two games is really pleasing with such a young side. I spoke before the game about the matchday squad having just an average age of 17 years 7 months which was the same on the opening day against Fleetwood Town Reserves. So, to see the players acquit themselves so well and begin to display that bit more experience within those tender years, bodes well for the football club and its future.

The only goal of the game came from vice-captain Liv Johnston who made it three goals in two games. Liv is starting to excel in her new role in the centre of midfield after playing the whole of last season at centre back. We could and should have added more goals, but our finishing wasn’t as sharp as it was against Fleetwood and the opposing goalkeeper also kept us at bay a number of times. We can move on to the next game (which at the time of writing with the covid situation as it is our opponents are TBC) drawing a lot of confidence from the first two games. Our aim this season is to push for promotion into the North West Women’s Regional League. But these young players know that it will not be easy, and they have to continue to find the consistency needed to be challenging for that right.

Player of the match on Sunday was a difficult decision as there were some notable performances from 17 year old centre back Beth Kerr, Liv Johnston, 16 year old Taylor Howarth in just her second game in open age football in the middle and also Lily Smith at right back. But 17-year-old goalkeeper Sophie Chapman who had a solid game, pulled off the best save we will ever see this season, right at the end of the game to keep a second clean sheet! Rightly so after a difficult pre-season she deserves the plaudits and the player of the match award.

Once again, I would like to thank our sponsors, Sundown Solutions, North West Logistics and Precise Solutions GPS LTD.
