Week 3: Update from the Head Coach – Accrington Stanley Ladies FC

Accrington Stanley Ladies FC Head Coach, Bryn Tracey, gives an update following last weekends postponements:

This weekend was a tough one for the players as both the u18s game and the first team game succumbed to the weather. That left us without any football, so we decided to host an in house friendly on Sunday evening at The Sports Hub. A massive amount of respect has to go to everyone that was there for the game especially the players as I have never seen weather like it. In heavy winds with driving rain Accrington Stanley Ladies Reds ran out 3-1 victors over Accrington Stanley Blues.

With a crop of players from the u18s just 15 years of age, and the oldest player on the pitch at 19 years of age, it was exciting to see the youthful exuberance that we have at this club. I have said before and will keep saying it, these are exciting times for Accrington Stanley Ladies FC with all of the young players learning week to week and they are only going to get better. Goals from the reds came from two 17-year olds, Tahnee Lucas with a brace and Megan Tracey with the other. The reply from the blues was scored by 19-year-old Nicole Sutcliffe.

There are challenging times ahead with covid 19 seemingly about to put grassroots sport on hold for a while. Whilst we hope we can carry on playing, we just have to wait and see what the official word will be in the coming days. To deny anybody, especially youngsters, the opportunity to play sport and do what they love doing is not particularly ideal we have to respect the government and the National Governing Bodies and their requests. If we are allowed to continue, we will see the first team to travel to Nelson Ladies for our third league game of the season where we will be hoping we can keep our 100% record going on Sunday. The u18s will be in action on Saturday at home to Lymm Diamonds. Stay tuned to the website and social media over the coming hours as we reveal this months Players of the Month for both teams from October.

UPDATE: Since writing the above comments, the government have confirmed that all grassroots and amateur sport will be paused until 3rd December 2020.
