Our National Citizenship Service (NCS) has been delivering its autumn programme over the last couple of weeks.
The NCS is a government scheme that is only offered to 16-17 year olds across the country. It brings together students from different back grounds and requires them to work as a team while building their confidence and attitudes. The programme is a recognised qualification and goes is recognised by UCAS.
The group of young people started their adventure with a residential at Rock UK in Newcastleton on the Scottish borders.
The weather held out for the many activities that they participated in while there such as night walks, mountain biking, abseiling and campfires which kept the young people on their toes they returned to Accrington last Wednesday night exhausted from their time away.
They all swiftly moved on to the next phase of the programme which saw them design fundraising ideas for a charity of their choice.
The teams came up with a FIFA tournament, sponsored leg wax and cake sale at their college where people around the college could donate to Pilgrim Bandits a charity that helps and inspires wounded soldiers to live life to the full. Accrington and Rossendale students raised £92.62 throughout the day.
The second and third group decided to hold a cake sale in Accrington market for two charities Rainbow Trust and Action for Elderly. They raised £189.17 the profits will be split into both charities. In addition one of the young people have set up a none-uniform day on Thursday at her brother’s primary school for Rainbow Trust.
Kathryn Hoyle, NCS officer said,’ it is brilliant to see the young people put so much effort in to the programme and dedicate their weekends to their delivery of their social action plan.’
