St Augustine’s in Girls Cup Glory

A-Team brings their A-Game to progress to the next round of the competition.

On Thursday, Accrington Stanley Community Trust welcomed six teams from the local area to participate in the Girls Cup Local Qualifying Round at the Stanley Sports Hub.

BRGS, Hyndburn Academy, Mount Carmel, Ribblesdale and two sides from St Augustine’s competed in a round robin format, with the winners progressing to the Regional Finals.

Two teams took an early lead in the standings with Ribblesdale and St Augustine’s A both picking up six points from their opening two matches, putting a marker down as contenders for the title early on.

As the competition drew nearer to its closing stages, BRGS gained momentum to join the early pacesetters, overtaking Ribblesdale into second position going into the final round of fixtures.

St Augustine’s A led the way with four wins from four matches, meaning that a victory over Mount Carmel would confirm their position in the Regional Finals. Only BRGS could put a spanner in the works, needing to beat Hyndburn Academy whilst hoping for a loss for the leaders.

However, there would be no late drama as St Augustine’s A triumphed with a 100% win record in the tournament, advancing to the Regional Finals in March where they will represent Accrington Stanley.

Head of Sport, Lee Walsh, was delighted to see a very good level of competition all afternoon, ‘the girls battled the horrible cold weather and played out a great event. We look forward to St Augustine’s representing us in the next round.’
